Anuran larvae as prey and hosts of invertebrates in neotropical aquatic habitats RChHN
Gambale,Priscilla Guedes; Batista,Vinícius Guerra; Oda,Fabrício Hiroiuki; Campos,Renata Mayara; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato; Bastos,Rogério Pereira.
BACKGROUND: Biotic processes, such as predation and parasitism events, are crucial for answering questions in ecology and evolution. Here, we report predation and ectoparasitism events of invertebrates upon tadpoles in aquatic habitats of southern Brazil. FINDINGS: Four lentic water bodies were sampled twice a month (December 2012 to March 2013). Those water bodies were located in the Diamante do Norte County, State of Paraná, southern Brazil. The tadpoles, Dendropsophus aff. minutus, Hypsiboas raniceps, Scinax fuscovarius, Physalaemus cuvieri and Elachistocleis bicolor were observed being predated by six different invertebrate predators. However, Leptodactylus fuscus and Pseudis sp. were also recorded on the same water bodies and were not observed being...

Histopathology from liver of tuvira ( Gymnotus spp.) parasitized by larvae of nematodes Ciência Rural
Ventura,Arlene Sobrinho; Ishikawa,Márcia Mayumi; Gabriel,Andrea Maria de Araújo; Silbiger,Helcy Lylian Nogueira; Cavichiolo,Fabiana; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological changes in the liver of thirty-five Gymnotusspp. parasitized by endohelminths collected between April 2012 to October 2013 in commercial bait fish farming of Pantanal basin. Histological cuts of 7µm were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for parasites research and liver changes and have also been submitted to the Perls histochemical method for evaluation of hemosiderosis (Fe+++) based on the incidence degree and severity of change (Grade I, II and III) and tests for the presence of central melanomacrophages. Parasites identified were: Brevimulticaecumsp. with a prevalence of 22,9%, Eustrongylidessp 17,1%, Contracaecumtype I 68,7%, Contracaecumtype II 5,7%, Contracaecumtype III 5,7% and larvae of...

Influence of the seasonal and environmental patterns and host reproduction on the metazoan parasites of Prochilodus lineatus BABT
Lizama,Maria de los Angeles Perez; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato; Pavanelli,Gilberto Cezar.
One hundred and forty-eight specimens of Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) were collected on the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. Kritskyia boegeri presented significant differences in the abundance according to the host stage of gonadal maturity. Ergasilus sp. presented negative correlation between the GSR of the females and parasite abundance. K. boegeri presented negative correlation between the GSR of the males and abundance. Tereancistrum curimba and Saccocoelioides magnorchis occurred in higher abundance in the open lagoons. Rhinonastes pseudocapsaloideum and S. nanii presented higher abundance in the channels and Tylodelphis sp. presented higher abundance in the closed lagoons and in the rivers. K. boegeri and Amplexibranchius sp....

Parasite-host relationship between the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum Cuvier 1818) and ectoparasites, collected from fish farms in the city of Rolim de Moura, State of Rondônia, Western Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Godoi,Mara Maria Izar de Maio; Engracia,Vera; Lizama,Maria de Los Angeles Perez; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato.
In this study we investigated the relationship between tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomumi Cuvier 1818) and parasites in two fish farms (L204S and L180N) in the state of Rondônia, Brazil, during a 1-year period. The objective of the study was to describe the relationships between parasites, hosts and the environment. From the 80 fish specimens collected, 100% were parasitized by at least one parasite species. Seven ectoparasites species were recorded, six of the class Monogenea: Anacanthorus spathulatusi, Mymarothecium spp. (Mymarothecium sp. 1, Mymarothecium sp. 2 and M. viatorum), Notozothecium sp. and Linguadactyloides brinkimanni, classified as dominants, and the copepod Perulernaea gamitanae, classified as subordinate. Despite their high prevalence,...

Parasitism by argulids (Crustacea: Branchiura) in piranhas (Osteichthyes: Serrasalmidae) captured in the Caiçara bays, upper Paraguay River, Pantanal, Mato Grosso state, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Fontana,Márcio; Takemoto,Ricardo Massato; Malta,José Celso de Oliveira; Mateus,Lúcia Aparecida de Fátima.
In this study, 446 fishes were analyzed: 190 Pygocentrus nattereri, 193 Serrasalmus maculatus, and 63 S. marginatus. They were captured in two bays, upper and lower Caiçara, in the upper Paraguay River basin, during one hydrological cycle from May 2008 to April 2009. Six species of Branchiura were found: Dolops bidentata, D. longicauda, Dolops sp., Argulus multicolor, A. chicomendesi, and Dipteropeltis hirundo. All fish species were infested by more than one species of Branchiura and the overall prevalence was 33.4%. The following prevalences were observed: 52.6% in P. nattereri; 20.3% in S. maculatus, and 15.8% in S. marginatus. The relative condition factor (Kn) differed significantly between parasitized and non parasitized individuals only in P....
